Sennacheribs reign was marked by many cruel,inhuman, and almost fiendish acts, such as the awfuldestruction of Babylon, which returned in vengeanceupon his own head. His death was a characteristicoriental court tragedy. While worshiping at theshrine of his god Nisroch (Nusku, in Assyrian),he is brutally assassinated by his two sons (2 Kingsxix. 37). The Babylonian chronicle speaks of onlyone as the assassin. This was the concluding act ofan insurrection in Nineveh. Neither of these twoguilty sons succeeded to the throne of their father.The aspiring assassins were younger sons of the greatmonarch, but, nevertheless, hopeful that their deedwould command general approval and win for oneof them the throne of the empire.
